At first, I just wanted to see if I could recreate the same made-up geometric shape more than once. After I made it enough times, I felt it should have a name. Dave felt like the right fit for personal and phonetic reasons. And the more Daves I made, the more I wanted to make. I played around with making them different sizes and with different materials. I experimented with different uses for different Daves. Eventually, I invited others to make Daves, so I made a pattern that someone with enough patience could follow and have a Dave of their very own. The pattern is available below, along with a video about making a Dave, and some examples of Daves that have been made by myself and others.
